Struggle to control
House fire: Volunteer Fire fighters did their best to control this Union St house
fire in Winton on Saturday morning but to no avail. Much of the building was
damaged during the blaze, although the occupants were lucky to escape

A Southland trust has been warming
people's homes and hearts for 17
But this week marked the end of
their work and a scheme, which has
seen hundreds of households war-
mer because of their selfless work.
The Southland Energy Efficiency
Trust has disbanded after Contact
Energy announced the end of their
co-operation with the group last
At the group's final meeting on
Friday, they signed the last cheques
to be given to community agencies
for households in need.
Trustee Anne Stoddart said the
scheme was a preventive pro-
gramme, instead of reactive.
They did not buy heaters for
households, but instead paid for
insulation, heavy drapes, pyjamas or
for people to have their hot water
It was about lowering their power
bills, not paying them, she said.
Trust chairman Colin Ballantyne
said the trust had given about
$300,000 to households throughout
Southland, something they were
''humbled'' to be able to do.
The scheme worked by Southland
residents rounding up their power
bill. That money was then collected
by the electricity company and given
to the trust.
But Contact decided last year that it
would not be continuing to collect
the money and that has forced the
end of the programme.
However, trustee Peter Richardson
said there was a lot more public
awareness about how to heat your
homes these days and the Warm
Homes scheme shared the same
ethos as the trust.

THE STORY SO FAR: The
Invercargill City Council's
proposed CBD upgrades have
drawn some criticism.
I agree with what Ken Hawkins had to
say about the Invercargill CBD
upgrades, particularly his final
comments. (Hawkins, from The Eye,
August 22, said: If the Dee and Tay
St changes go ahead, I won't be using
either street ever and would bypass
the CBD completely.'')
In addition, can anyone remember
the traffic jams of the 1960s when
there was centre parking on the main
Also, many residents would not walk
down to the so-called proposed
green areas where the bowling green
The weather in Invercargill isn't that
bad but, regrettably, Esk St isn't
ideally situated for the weather we
