Beach proud: Invercargill resident Vanessa Buckeridge has got some backers who
share her concerns Oreti Beach is being used as a rubbish dump and, it seems, as a dirt
bike riding area.

Let's keep our beach special
I have been pleased to see in the
paper over the past few weeks that
some people are getting sick of the
way we look after the beach.
And that s whether it is because of
rubbish being left behind because of
the lack of rubbish containers, or
people cleaning out their vehicles on
the beach, or simply because some
people can t afford to go to the
But along with the rubbish, there
comes another problem -- the
speeding motocross trail bikers --
and, of course, four-wheel-drive
They drive around ripping up the
On many occasions, I have
confronted those people.
I am of the opinion that if you can not
use the beach properly, then don t
use it at all.
The worst part of the beach is down
at the north end entrance where
there seems to be an out of sight, out
of mind mentality.
On most Saturday and Sunday
afternoons, many unload their trail
bikes and down the beach they go.
Never mind about the speed.
Sometimes they have no helmets and
they go through, over, under and
around the dunes, leaving grasses,
flax and alike flattened behind them.
After many many phone calls and
visits to the Department of
Southland, Southland District Council
and the police, I am of the opinion
that not one of these departments
can help because of the differing land
areas they each look after.
Surely they can all get in contact with
each other and get this under control
once and for all.
Oreti Beach is a special place for all
I have been fighting for this for at
least eight to 10 years.
I am currently working on a Facebook
page to create awareness and to try
and get people involved with looking
after our beach.
Proposed changes annoy
The city council roading department
should leave Don St as it is because it
was changed to one way to make it
The claim that it is to "support new
investment" is absolute rubbish.
They don t explain how.
It is said that two lanes means more
traffic and hopefully more
Well, where is the extra traffic going
The proposed change that really
annoys me is the one to make Dee
and Tay into single lane streets.
As far as I am concerned, that move
would create massive snarl-ups in
traffic movement, especially at peak
times and be frustrating in general. I
doubt it would be better or safer for
If the Dee and Tay St changes go
ahead, I won t be using either street
ever and would bypass the CBD
