New apple varieties tempt gardeners
Get growing: You can now plant Pacific Rose fruit trees.
At this time of year
many new fruit and
vegetable plants are
released on to the
fruit trees are often seen, as the
dormant plants can be planted
now. Here's a run-down of the
latest in the shops.
One of our most popular eating
apples, Pacific Rose, is now
available for home gardeners to
grow. Developed from a cross of
Gala and Splendour, the fruit is
medium to large sized, with a sweet
flavour and crunchy flesh. Fruit is
harvested in April, and stores well
in chilled conditions until the end
of July. Trees are available on
dwarf rootstock (growing to 2
metres tall) and semi dwarf
rootstock (growing to 3.5m tall),
which are ideal for container
growing and small gardens. This
plant is grown by Waimea
Nurseries and available from
Another new apple released just
this month is Thumbelina Mini
Ruby Crunch. It's about a quarter
of the size of a regular apple, so it's
perfect for small hands and
lunchboxes. Bred in Central Otago,
it's grown on dwarf rootstock, so
the tree is compact as well,
growing just 2m high. There are
others in the range too:
Thumbelina Mini Golden Crunch,
a delicious golden-yellow coloured
apple, and Thumbelina Mini
Candy Crunch, which has bright
You've probably heard a lot of talk
about the goji berry or wolfberry
(Lycium barbarum), a Chinese
native that's renowned for its
highly nutritious fruit. The bright
orange-red 1 to 2 centimetre berries
are loaded with vitamins, minerals
and antioxidants. Typically they
are dried and eaten as a snack,
added to muesli, soups or
casseroles, or made into fruit juice.
Well, now the seed is available
from Kings Seeds (the plants
themselves are sometimes found at
garden centres). A frost-hardy
plant, grown from seed it takes 2-3
years to fruit, and thrives in well-
limed, well-drained soil. Trees will
fruit better when grown together.
On the vegetable front we have
Cicoria spadona, or sword chicory,
from Italian Seeds Pronto. This is
an upright plant with long,
rounded leaves and thin stems. A
cut-and-come again variety, the
leaves are cut for use in salads.
Plants are fully mature in 30 or so
days. Direct sow in a prepared bed
or container from spring to winter.
Other cut-and-come again offerings
include flower sprouts
Kaleidoscope Mix F1 (Brassica
oleracea), from Kings Seeds. These
are a new class of vegetable bred by
crossing kale and brussels sprouts
to resemble colourful flowers or
rosettes on stalks of tall, upright
plants, just like brussels sprouts.
The flowers have a taste and
texture similar to kale and can be
steamed, sauteed, stir-fried and
roasted. The Kaleidoscope Mix
contains a healthy mix of green,
purple and bicolour sprouts.
Mustard Coloured Frills (Brassica
juncea and Brassica rapa), also
from Kings Seeds, is a blend of at
least six different feathered and
frilled mild mustards for micro-
harvest. The young leaves are
perfect for sandwiches.
