Farm opens to public for alpaca day
Alpaca experience: Brian Butt is opening up his alpaca farm to the public this weekend for National Alpaca Day.
When: Sunday, May 5, 10-3pm.
Where: Buttsbury Alpacas at 361 McQuarrie St.

Every year farmer Brian Butt and his wife,
Phyllis, open up their property to the public for
the National Alpaca Day, and this year will be no

the opportunity to get up close and personal with
the curious animals at Buttsbury Alpacas.
He hopes this year will be no different, with
children getting to hand-feed the inquisitive
animals, pat them and walk them on leads, or
sometimes the other way around, he laughs.
''They are cunning devils.''

South's Junior Netball Academy

week skill development
programme for children aged 8-15
years. The academy runs in

Muddy buddies get in the fun

first Mud Run
When: Sunday, May 26
Where: Lora Gorge, near Browns
Distances: 2km, 4km or 6km
Team categories: Comrades
Mudmates (mixed teams)
Mudolescence (students aged 18
years or under)
Mud Cuzzies (family team, minimum
age 12 years, unless accompanied
by a parent/guardian)

Mud, sweat and possibly a few tears
are on the cards at Southland's
inaugural ''Muddy Buddy'' mud run
event next month.
Organised by Central Southland
College's sports council, with sup-
port from Sport Southland, mud will
be the order of the day when teams
of four tackle the slippery slopes of
the course on May 26.
There will be 10 obstacles for
competitors to take on, including a
net to crawl under, swinging tyres to
go through, a creek crossing and a
huge mudslide to finish.
The event includes a 2km, 4km or
6km course on a farm at Lora Gorge,
near Browns, with the Winton
Volunteer Fire Brigade on hand to
create extra mud.
Central Southland College sports
councillor Jessica Mangos said the
event had something for everyone.
''We've opened up different
categories, with sections for
corporates, students and families.
