School standards nowhere near those of the old days, consequences needed
THE STORY SO FAR:
Ministry of Education
figures show there were 150
Southland school pupils
suspended or stood down
for assaults at school in
2012. There were 461
Southland high and primary
school pupils stood down or
removed for a variety of
issues last year.
Time to get real'.
We're such a bunch of namby-
pambies and so politically correct
these days that if children
misbehave they get stood down,
which means a few days off
That's going to teach them a
lesson, isn't it? Not.
Who doesn't love a holiday? When
I went to school there was
We acted up, we got caned. There
were never assaults on teachers
because there were
Now you whack the teacher and
they give you a couple of days off.

Abridged - editor
To correspondent Marie Lockie
Sorry, we did not understand what
you were trying to say. Editor.
A selection of Eye and
Southland Times Facebook
comments on our story, with
some comments abridged, were:
They need a good kick up the bum.
If there were consequences, they
wouldn't behave like this. --- Jo
I think they should look at bullying.
Wonder how many attacks were
because nobody actually listened
and (the) last resort (was to)
attack. --- Phillipa Cameron
People need to look closer to
home. Kids (are) led by their
parents' example and
unfortunately we have more and
more mongrel parents raising
arsehole kids due to the lack of
decent role models in the home.
--- Sarah Aitken
In my years at Hargest, I got in 4
fights and only stood down for 1.
They (were) not very good with
punishment. --- Louisa Baird
If you all feel this strongly, put
your names forward for school
board of trustees elections this
month and help make a difference
at your local school. --- Rayelene
My son has been beaten up 4
times in 6 months. One was bad
and caught on video. She just got a
telling off. Sad to know our kids
aren't safe at school. --- Shelley
My son's 13 and he gets picked on
because he's hearing impaired. ---
Not sure about the other schools
but my daughter's one is crap.
They let children in their school
uniform smoke right outside
theirschool. I drive past every day
and get so annoyed that they are
allowed to do that. I have
complained many times and get
told they have things in place yet
they are still smoking outside. ---
I thought schools (were) supposed
to be a happy place. Oh, how
things have changed. There are a
lot of angry kids out there these
days. They let kids smoke outside
the school gate in their school
uniform. That is shocking. The
newspaper should take photos and
name and shame the school.
What's the country coming to?
The future does not look great. ---
