Cats copping unfair condemnation
STORY SO FAR: Well known economist Gareth Morgan wants to save New Zealand's unique birds by eradicating cats.
What do you think of Gareth
Morgan's cat eradication idea and
creation of a website to promote

Deal to the fat cats
Mr Morgan, pick on someone your
own size. Leave the real cats
alone. It's not the real cats that are
the problem in this country. If you
want to do something, then deal to
a certain breed of fat cats in the
Government in Wellington, instead
of worrying what cats are doing to
the birds because that is nature.
And I love cats and birds.
On the right track
Gareth Morgan is definitely on the
Domestic cats are the most
efficient killers on earth.
According to the United States'
study published in the journal
Nature Communications, cats in
America kill 2.4 billion birds and
small mammals every year.
That's more than the number
killed by cars, wind turbines,
pesticides and striking
skyscrapers combined, says one of
the authors of the study, Peter
Marra from the Smithsonian
Conservation Biology Institute.
The main trouble is that when
people want to get rid of
unwanted cats they don't go to the
vet because that would cost them
money. So they release them into
Always before Christmas holidays
people used to come to the
veterinary surgeries with their
unwanted pets. They claimed
some hazy signs and symptoms
and asked the surgery to keep
them for observation.
Needless to say, they never came
back to pick them up. So vets
started to ask for payments in
Another killing machine --
Meet Ratbag, an old stray cat who
took up residence in my woodshed
some years ago. I can vouch for
the fact that he never leaves my
property -- probably glad to
receive regular feeds every day --
and shares his food with a little
mouse who also has taken up
residence in the woodshed.
Pity with all his millions that
Gareth Morgan won't emulate
Louis Crimp and make a decent
donation to the SPCA to spay and
Territorial birds concern
On the cats versus Gareth Morgan
saga, I think he is a total tool
to think getting rid of cats
will bring all our native birds
back. Getting rid of territorial
birds like the magpie would
do much more good.
Also, plant more native trees
that the native birds feed on
and live in. They would then
naturally, given the right
environment. As for the cats,
does anyone see the number
of introduced bird species
dwindling? Of course not, so what
Mr Morgan is saying is that native
bird species are somehow dumber
than your average sparrow? Come
on, get a grip.
Hitler of cats
Mr Morgan must have a major
disliking for cats if he wants to kill
them all. He is rich and thinks that
because of his amount of money
people will listen to him about
killing all domestic cats, along with
wild cats, of which 95 per cent
have probably never once harmed
let alone seen a native bird. He is
the Hitler of cats, and it's
disgusting as well as despicable
and sickening. Rebekah Willis
