Nice wheels: Anita Kemp and Lady Loulou get around town now on a trolley made from a discarded pram.

That's a really tyred dog
By GWYNETH HYNDMAN
Lady Loulou is on a roll --- now
that she has a sturdy set of wheels.
The german shepherd and rough
coat collie cross has been slowly
losing the use of her right back leg
after years of performing as an
But owner Anita Kemp didn't
believe 13-year-old Lady Loulou
should be put down because the
condition was not painful -- just
''She's still got her appetite and
she's too happy to be put down,''
said Ms Kemp, who adopted
Loulou when the dog was 10
''She's been such a wonderful dog,
I can't just dispose of her.''
She was aware Loulou was having
a harder time getting around in
the past year and it was hard to
say how quickly her condition
would progress before she lost the
use of her legs completely.
''It could be two years; it could be
So Ms Kemp started planning and
her ''wheels got turning'' when
she saw a TV programme about a
disabled dog that moved with a
She mentioned the idea to friends
at the Southland Dog Training
Club, which kicked off some
''They just said, 'I think we could
do that [for Loulou]' and we got
her measured and fitted for it.''
Made out of a discarded baby
pram, the trolley is rigged up to
Loulou's back legs, with her feet
tucked into booties that dangle off
They were now back out walking
on Otepuni Track, a place that
Loulou has always loved to
''People are really intrigued but
happy to see it,'' said Ms Kemp,
who added that the trolley got
some funny looks but generally
people thought it was a great idea.
Ms Kemp would not prolong her
life if she began to suffer.
''When the time comes, she'll be
cremated,'' Ms Kemp said.
''She's still a happy, well-balanced
girl. She's done right by me, and I
want to do right by her.''
Loulou's vet for the past decade,
Dr Cath Watson, said the dog's
condition wasn't painful and the
solution was ideal.
''It's a labour of love,'' said Dr
Watson, who had only ever seen
trolleys like that commercially
and overseas and was usually
valued ''in the thousands''.
''I think it's a good idea; she's
retained her bladder and bowel
functions and isn't in pain. It's
important for dogs with this kind
of problem to have their freedom.''
